As some downtowns struggle to attract even one grocery store, St. Petersburg can now claim two. Publix has opened its second location in the downtown core at 700 Central Ave. (That’s just four blocks from our Vela site.) It’s 1,000 feet larger than the Third Street store to the east, and its main mission seems to be to attract the grab and go crowd. The front of the store is very deli-centric. In fact, the Tampa Bay Business Journal has a fun story about how it seems to be a restaurant with a grocery store attached. Read more about it here.
